Machine Knitted Felt
Our Machine Knitted Felt is made from top quality 100% Shetland wool.
Machine knitted felt is beautifully soft and pliable and comes in a huge range of glorious colours and combinations.
Some felt is made from hand dyed yarn and colours may vary from batch to batch. The felting process can also alter the colours and sizes of the felt, so please order sufficient for your project.
Felt can be applied to felt, for small items, or a firm fabric, such as cotton, for larger items.
Pin the felt securely, using long pins, to prevent it from 'travelling'. Appliqué the felt using a zigzag stitch of medium width and medium length, blanket stitch by hand using a single ply thread, such as Cotton Perle or Pearl Cotton and hand or machine embroidery.
Felt can be padded to give a 3D or quilted effect. Cut the felt to the required shape. Cut a smaller piece of felt for the area which is to be padded, e.g. teddy's tummy, the petals of a flower, a circle or a heart. Attach the smaller piece of felt with zigzag stitch and place the main piece of felt over the top and attach using your preferred method. Wadding or toy stuffing could be used in the place of the smaller piece of felt depending on the effect you require.
A cocktail or kebab stick should be used to hold the felt when attaching small pieces. DO NOT USE YOUR FINGERS. A cocktail stick or kebab stick can also be used to gently push the felt, e.g. the point of a leaf can be gently pushed to give a curved shape.
Appliquéd felt can be embellished with beads, sequins and hand or machine embroidery etc.
Try using two layers of felt on your design as this will give you the opportunity to introduce lots of colour into your work. If you wish to use three layers, the top two layers should be attached to each other first and then the final layer can be attached to the main fabric, as you will probably find that three layers of felt plus your main fabric are too thick to put under the foot of your sewing machine.
The selvedge of the felt rolls back on to itself. Cut if off and use it for couching. There is no waste with felt as pieces as small as 1/2" (1cm) can be used.
Felt shapes can be embellished and appliquéd or alternatively attached to a blank greetings card using double sided sticky tape and, of course, it does not fray.
Always clean your sewing machine after using felt.
Additional colours and sizes of felt are available upon request. We have a small range of undyed colours 'straight from the sheep'.
We try to keep the colours on this site as accurate as possible, but allowances should be made for colour differences possible during the dyeing process and resolution properties of computer monitors.
